small leaved lime (Tilia cordata)

This native tree has perfectly heart shaped leaves and its sweet smelling starry yellow flowers fill summer days with a heady fragrance which attracts the honey bees. It is the longest lived of our collection - some specimens have lived for over 1,000 years! It can grow to a great stature, 30m, so is often used for avenues & parklands but we have seen it grown successfully in tubs in much smaller places. Lime honey is much prized and folk belief associates the Lime with femininity and fertility. Its wood is excellent for carving and turning & is still used today by piano makers. Happy on moist soils throughout the UK and tolerates air polution well.
