large english walnut (Juglans regia)

Not actually a native tree, the Walnut was probably brought into the UK by the Romans. Juglans means Jupiter's nut which refers to its popular edible "corrugated" nuts. The leaves are aromatic & glossy. This tree is slow growing but can grow to a large stature (30m). Its wood is of excellent quality, prized by furniture makers & used for gun stocks & veneers. It is used to make good black ink & wood stains. These trees are bigger, they have been potted up for a second time and are now in a 1L pot.
