crab apple (Malus sylvestris)

The native Crab apple is the parent of our apple orchards. It is a small (10m) attractive tree with small pale pink, lightly scented flowers in spring and yellow to red sharp crab apples in autumn for wildlife or jelly/wine making. The timber has a very fine texture suitable for turning, carving and making precision instruments such as set squares. The folklore of apples is usually associated with finding true love and marriage. Happy on all but waterlogged soils. Represents Qu (Quert) in the tree alphabet.
