large sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa)

This tree was probably bought to Britain by the Romans. It sows itself, often helped by squirrels & jays burying chestnuts for winter stores. It grows rapidly on well drained lime free soils, can reach a massive 30m and can live for about 500 years. It coppices well & was often grown this way to produce timber for fencing. The spring brings fragrant yellow catkins & long toothed leaves which are dark green & glossy. In autumn they remain crunchy so producing a delicious rustling underfoot. The shiny dark brown nuts are edible and linked with winter festivals throughout Europe. They are used in savoury stuffings, sweet confections and eaten just plain roasted from street sellers.
