Our native Hazel was one of the first trees to establish themselves after the last ice age. It forms a small (12m) often many stemmed tree. Hazelnuts are produced when the trees are planted in pairs, which makes an excellent engagement or wedding present. The Hazel is very impressive in late winter when it is draped in long yellow, "lambstail" catkins. For timber it is usually coppiced producing straight, flexible rods for products such as hurdles and thatching spars. In folklore Hazel is a magical tree, it protects against evil spirits and is used to make water divining rods and wands. It was also a symbol of fertility and knowledge. It is widespread and happy in most situations. Represents C (Coll) in the tree alphabet.
