silver birch (Betula pendula)

The "Lady of the Woods" is our native birch. Its characteristic white bark and graceful slender habit makes it eternally popular. It has delicate, sharply cut diamond shaped leaves and yellow-green catkins in springtime. The fruits attract flocks of small birds like siskins & redpolls in winter. The timber has not been highly prized, although it made good bobins and spools for the textile industry. The twigs have been used traditionally for beating, sweeping and massaging and the sap to make sugar syrup and wine. The Silver Birch grows rapidly to a medium height (10-15m) making it an excellent choice for a new garden. Will grow in most open positions and thrives on poor, light, sandy soils. Tolerant of air polution. Represents B (Beth) in the tree alphabet.
