hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

Our native Hawthorn is also known as May, Quickthorn & Whitethorn. It is slow growing and forms a mystical, ancient looking tree (10m) The dense tangled crown is a favoured nesting site. The perfusion of pink tinged, deeply scented white flowers in May mark the onset of Spring. The abundant red haws or berries are probably the main winter food for wild birds and small mammals. The timber is pinkish, fine & dense so is used for turning. Hawthorn is steeped in folklore and magic. It is regarded as the home of the "little people" and has Christian connections as the Crown of Thorns. Hawthorn is very hardy and even tolerent of city pollution. Represents H (Huath) in the tree alphabet.
