Holly (Ilex aquafolium) Our native Holly is the most familiar of evergreens. Its scarlet berries and dark green, shiny, prickly leaves are associated with Christmas. It has been cultivated since ancient times. It grows slowly to form a small conical tree (15m) making it suitable for enclosed areas. Its dense foliage makes excellent wildlife shelter. Despite its prickles holly makes good winter fodder for farm animals. Single trees are often defended by a pair of mistle thrushes, partly for the long lasting food supply as holly berries survive even the hardest of winters. The wood is used for inlay work and carving as chess pieces for example. Holly was said to ward off witches, poison, goblins and lightening. As the home of fairies it was unlucky to cut down a Holly tree. Hardy in all but waterlogged positions. Represents T (Tinne) in the tree alphabet.

| Italian Alder (Alnus cordata) The Italian Alder is not a British native but its glossy dark green leaves, prolific catkins & friut, lovely shape & speed growth won us over. It was introduced to Britain in 1820 & in our opinion is the finest Alder. It carries its empty fruits, which look like tiny cones, for years so always looks interesting. It can fix nitrogen so is happy in infertile soils, and thrives in the cold & wet (sounds like Britain!) Alders are usually associated with river banks but this one is happy on dryer soils and even thrives on chalk. It needs full sunlight and will not tolerate shade. The timber withstands constant soaking & drying so is used for lock & sluice gates. It also makes the best gunpowder charcoal. It is a medium sized tree, reaching 20m at maturity.
