field maple (Acer campestre)

A medium sized (15m) picturesque tree with attractive foliage. Its leaves, shaped like an open hand, unfurl pinkish and turn a spectacular yellow/red in the autumn. The flowers are not showy but are valued by bees for honey making. Seed heads are winged and fall as "helicopters" or "keys". The timber is very fine grained and good for turning and veneers. The sap is sugary and used to make syrup or wine. Happy in shade and on most soil types. Very tolerant of air pollution.
