copper beech (Fagus sylvatica atropurpureum)

The Copper Beech is a stunning variation on our native green Beech. Its name is derived from the same stem as "book" and Beech are believed across Europe to protect against lightening - the perfect gift for a bookworm or any other learners! Beech nuts make excellent winter food for wildlife. The wood is used for furniture making, it burns well so is used to smoke Scottish herrings and its charcoal is well suited to gunpowder manufacture. Beech wood remains strong when wet & Beech piles help hold up Waterloo Bridge in London to this day. The Beech can grow to a large spreading tree (30m) but responds well to clipping & shaping. It lives for about 300 years & is very tolerant of all but waterlogged soils.
